Clown Birthday Cake

After the Clown Themed children’s party post, the clown birthday cake needed to have its own recognition. This clown cake shaped into a clown face, hat and bowtie is easy to shape from a boxed cake mix. The quick and easy guide below will give you everything you need to create your own clown birthday cake.

Start With a Cake and Two Pans

Simply prepare a cake mix according to the box directions. Pour the batter into one square baking pan and one round baking pan. And then bake according to the package directions.

Shaping the Cake

After your cake has cooled completely and been removed from the cake pans you will cut the cakes into pieces like this.

I like to prepare a board for the cake to be displayed by wrapping a piece of cardboard in foil or wrapping paper. Next I lay a piece of wax paper on the wrapped board. After you have prepared your cake board, go ahead and arrange your cut pieces like so.

Frosting the Cake

To ensure you have enough frosting, I recommend 2 containers of vanilla frosting. Divide the frosting into different bowls and add the coloring you like. I used white frosting plus three other colors – orange, yellow and blue.

Decorating the Cake

After you have each section frosted, use candy to decorate the face.

  • Licorice twist for hat trim.
  • Small candies such as Skittles, Reese Pieces or M&Ms to edge the hat and the bow tie. Red pieces for the smile.
  • 1 white gumdrop for the hat pom pom. 1 red gumdrop halved for the two rosy cheeks. 1 purple gumdrop for the nose.
  • Life Savors Mints for the candle holders on the hat.
  • Two Oreo cookies for the eyes. Break one cookie side in half to expose half the white cream center. Top each with a small candy as the eyeballs.

I love decorating with candy! Nothing could be easier!

And that’s all there is to that. Easy peasy.
