Triple Chocolate Brownies

We all love brownies, don’t we? And homemade brownies are much more dense, thick, and fudgy than a store-bought mix! This amazing Triple Chocolate Brownie recipe combines cocoa, chocolate chips and chocolate buttercream frosting.

Fudge Factor

I’m no food scientist, but there’s something about the process of cocoa and heat that creates the ultimately gooey fudge flavor we love. You find this in my recipe for Deep Dark Chocolate Cake and also in this recipe for Triple Chocolate Brownies. That hot, melted butter stirred into the cocoa and baking soda instantly creates a thick fudgy paste. Add boiling water and the process continues. That’s how you know these are going to be really good brownies!

Butter, Baby!

Real butter is a key component of these fudgy Triple Chocolate Brownies. By cutting two sticks of butter on the indicated 1/3 line, you have the 2/3 cup required for the brownie recipe. And the remaining 1/3 cup can soften on the counter to use later for the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting.

Is Brown Sugar is Better?

I’m a big fan of brown sugar and I use it in all my baking. I love that the molasses/caramel flavor adds more depth making the fudgy even more fudgy and gooey. But you can certainly use white sugar if that’s what you have.

Chips of Choice

Cocoa is already nicely bitter. Dark chocolate lovers like me should always opt for the semisweet chocolate chips. But if you want to use milk chocolate that is perfectly fine. If in doubt, try semisweet.

Beat the Batter

Brownie batter likes to be beaten, but you don’t need an electric mixer. You’ll want to beat by hand with a wooden spoon after you add each egg. And don’t be afraid to beat well again after you’ve added in those dry ingredients.

Brownies are their own reward

Please don’t be intimidated by the many steps of homemade Triple Chocolate Brownies. Yes, it’s a little more work than a box brownie mix. There are several steps and lots of mixing. But I’m pretty sure you’ll agree that a whole pan of the most delicious brownies you’ve ever tasted will be worth it in the end.

Triple Chocolate Brownies

Yield: 32 brownies

Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup cocoa
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 2/3 cup butter, melted
  • ½ cup boiling water
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Brownies

  • 3/4 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2/3 cup melted butter, divided
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 2 cups brown sugar*
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Frosting

  • 1/3 cup softened butter
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 2 2/3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Grease a 9x13” baking pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, stir together cocoa and baking soda with a wooden spoon. Blend in 1/3 cup of melted butter. Add boiling water and stir until well blended and thick (mixture will resemble pudding).
  3. Stir in sugar. Stir in eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Stir in remaining 1/3 cup melted butter.
  4. Add flour, vanilla and salt. Blend well. Stir in chocolate chips and pour into prepared baking pan.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes until brownies pull away from the edge of the pan.
  6. Cool completely and frost with Chocolate Buttercream.

For Chocolate Buttercream frosting:

  1. Cream butter with an electric mixer. Add cocoa and powdered sugar alternately with milk. Blend in vanilla. Beat to desired consistency.

Notes

*Can substitute white sugar
